About

Luke | January 3, 2007 |

When Luke first started this site, he wanted it to be about all the things he learned while cooking; hence Cookography, the study of cooking. Just like Geography is the study of Geo, or something. Anyhow, Luke quickly came to realize that he liked photographing food more than he liked writing about. The name still works, it is sort of the combination of cooking  and photography. This is really fun for Luke and slightly annoying for Carolyn, who would rather eat the food than photograph it! Carolyn is the official taster/editor of Cookography, which is an unpaid internship.

As much as we try to keep up with posting photos and recipes we try, both of us have day jobs. Luke is a computer nerd and Carolyn tries to save the World.

Luke doesn’t really have any cooking or photography experience; he has definitely been learning as he goes on both accounts. For photography, Strobist has been a great site for getting started using flashes. Flashes make food photography a lot easier.

Luke and Carolyn have been happily cooking/photographing/eating/ writing about food since 2002. With the exception of a food poisoning incident on our third date, we’ve been pretty successful. We are always game to try new recipes, so let us know if you have something good! Also let us know if you have any corrections or suggestions!

I spent an hour online looking for an excellent French onion soup before I found your Best-ever FOS. Then I spent another hour going through all your other recipes. Then I added your site to my Favorites. Way to go & keep up the good work!

Now I’m on my way to Safeway to pick up some onions…

PS — lived in Alexandria, VA 17 yr, now retired in Tucson AZ

My name is Olivia Fraga and I work as a journalist in one of the biggest newspapers in out country, called O Estado de S. Paulo.
I write mostly about food and restaurants, to our weekly edition of PALADAR (WWW.estadao.com.br/paladar).
I’m writing now an article about nettles, and I recently saw some pictures of it in your blog.
Could we use this images, crediting it for you?

    Great work.

I just discovered your blog while I was looking for a definition of “chili beans.” Looks likes we have some cooking interests in common, with the same challenges of children! Looking forward to visiting your site regulary. Check out my flood blog if you have time: http://www.mykrazykitchen.blogspot.com

Great Site… just came across it today and made the vodka pasta recipe. AWESOME. Keep up the good work.

Very cool. . .or hot as the case may be! Bookmarked right away. Love the pics.

Re the spellcheckering. . .take it with a grain of salt. And, on that topic, I like your conservative hand with salt in the French onion soup.

  10. Speller says:

Learn to spell dessert, not desert. idiots.

    • Johno says:

Aice job on this site!h lighten up, it is a blog posted by real people, not Emril’s latest cookbook.

      Nice job on this site!!!

    • RSpence says:

Great site! I am book marking!

Wow, I am amazed how some people can be so unforgiving & tacky. I’m with Johno – lighten up!

    • BV says:

Anyone can make a mistake… but using Emeril as example of good grammar is the most farfetched and ridiculous idea. The clown mames the language every time he opens his mouth!

P.S. – The site looks great too!

Coulda been a typo, loe a little Speller!

I tried the “best French Onion Soup…ever!” recipe and it was exactly that! My husband was begging me to find a good recipe and give it a try. He loves French Onion Soup and I had never made it. I’m a pretty adventurous cook, so I tackled this recipe at 8 o’clock one evening. I’m proud to say that just shortly before midnight, I sat the most beautiful bowl of cheesy, crusty, golden brown French Onion Soup down in front of him! He was in heaven!!!

I just found this site today b/c I needed to poach chicken. I intended to get a lot of housework done today, however, I can’t stop reading. Thanks for a fun site with so much great information. Yay, pictures! I better get back to vacuuming and watering my plants. Oh, by the way, the bird turned out juuuust right to use in chicken pot pie with egg noodles!

    hi Luke

I love fava beans (I discovered them before the summer and got addicted to them and then I had to leave to go back home for the summer so i missed the season) and I looked for them in whole foods in LA but I didn’t see them. Can you find them frozen all year long? That was a very funny post.

    Hi Luke,
I am so impressed with the upgraded design for the site. I wonder if you would be willing sometime to help me out a bit with mine, which is right now just a very boring blogger template…Any suggestions would be helpful…

Thanks! I can definitely help out. I might charge a loaf of bread though next time I am in NYC. I’ll send you an email.

  15. Holly Stringfellow says:

I made your Best Ever French Onion Soup and it was a hit at the office. I love that you cook the onions in the oven. It frees me up to get other things accomplished while they are cooking. I will make this many more times I am sure. I am going to try your bread soon. I love your site.

    Holly

  16. Ghost says:

Nice site! Thanks for sharing the 07 and 08 compilations. Can’t wait to try some of the recipes.

  17. Judy Wilson says:

This may be a really strange request but here goes – first of all I love your presentations. I have tried to find the soup bowl shown in “the best onion soup ever” and cnnot locate them. Can you give me a clue regarding brand or where to look. – Thanks. Enjoy your website.

  18. Tom N says:

I really like the site. The recipes are fun, and I’m really impressed with the photos. I’d love it if you could give some tips for photographing food and other things — I have the hardest time taking good photos of wine bottles for my website.

  19. Julie says:

I really like your recipes…they look like things I would actually make and eat. Not things I haven’t heard of and look scary. I’ll keep checking back.

  20. Ashley says:

Amazing site! I love the material and the writing! If I could encourage you to write everyday, I would! My husband and I were instant fans after the cheese steak taco recipe was discovered. And it already seems as though we have so many dishes in common!

  21. Luke says:

Thanks Alison! yea… I am a horrible speller. Carolyn caught this a while ago, and I have just been too lazy to correct it across the site. I really have to do it though, because as far as errors go, this one is pretty bad. Thanks catching this!

  22. Luke says:

Thanks for swinging by Sally! See you this weekend.

  23. Bob says:

I’ve got a great idea: come up with something sweet and tasty and we’ll call it the Gobi Dessert…

  24. Hi Luke! I love the website, finally had a sec to check it out. Photos are awesome and I am very impressed in general. I can’t wait to try some of your recipes.

    See you this wknd,
    Sally

  25. Alison says:

Site bookmarked- I too love cooking, and find photos of a recipe incredibly inspiring! I can’t wait to explore cookography.
Just one thing, and I know it’s silly, but I’m a type-A linguist and feel a small pinch of physical pain when I see ‘desert’(the generic after-dinner dish is ‘dessert’).

    Happy cooking :)

Hi Emily, Thanks for stopping by Cookography. Carolyn get all the credit for the Gazpacho. I still have not been to Spain, I am a little jealous of both you and Carolyn. We went and checked DCAC and two of my pieces of my “Art” sold. The Lego diarama and a robot painting. I think it helped that they were two of the cheapest in the show. Art pricing is an art of it own.

  27. Emily Goodman says:

I love your gazpacho recipe! I studied abroad in Sevilla and this is spot on to what my senora made, except she did add cucumber into the mixture. When were you in Cordoba…that was one of my favorite cities to visit in Andalucia, I went twice!

By the way, I saw your work at the DCAC arts exhibit (I’m pete-bakes.com’s girlfriend…he showed me your stuff)and I thought it was really awesome. We were at the opening for only a couple of minutes, but I hope to go back this week and check out everything again.

    Ciao!
    Emily
